Brahmi Uses
-
Brain
-
Brahmi appears to have certain chemicals that positively influence brain function and improve circulation. Popular uses include improving memory, fighting off degenerative changes due to aging or conditions like Parkinson's disease and Alzheimers's disease, and ADHD.
Dr. Weil makes note of an Australian study where participants took 300 mg of brahmi daily or a placebo. The group receiving the herb showed significant improvement in learning, memory and information processing.
Stress
-
This herb is an adaptogen, which means its helps the body adapt to and reduce stress. Dr. Weil also noted a small study that showed a decrease in anxiety when taking this supplement. Coupled with its ability to increase concentration, it could be a useful supplement for people with stressful work or learning environments.
Diarrhea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
-
Brahmi is also commonly used as a natural treatment for diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). According to the publication Prescription for Herbal Healing, research indicates this herb was beneficial for addressing symptoms of IBS and worked better than conventional treatments when diarrhea was the main symptom. It should be noted, however, that brahmi nor the conventional treatments showed benefit for preventing relapse six months later.
