The Use of Fish Oil for Joint Pain

Joint pain is often associated with arthritis. However, according to the National Institutes of Health, it can also be caused by bursitis, joint injuries, gout and tendinitis. One of the dietary supplements believed to have an effect on joint pain is the omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil is a good source of omega-3.
  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • According the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," omega-3 fatty acids may suppress joint inflammation and reduce joint pain.

    Fish Oil

    • Commercially available fish oil supplements contain omega-3 fatty acids. Follow label directions in regards to dosing.

    Omega-3 in Foods

    • Omega-3 fatty acids are available in fatty fish. It would be necessary to consume at least two servings of fish each week to receive the recommended level of omega-3 fatty acids.

    Other Sources of Omega-3

    • Vegetarians or others not able to consume fish oil can substitute flax seed oil. Flax seed oil is available in a variety of forms.

    Effectiveness

    • According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," tests run on omega-3 fatty acids are usually staged over several months to determine effectiveness. Allow plenty of time for the fish oil to take effect.
