Omega 3 oils for acne treatment

Acne is defined as a skin disorder characterized by inflammation, blackheads and whiteheads, and pimples. The American Academy of Dermatology considers it the most commonly treated skin disorder, affecting about 80 percent of Americans during their teenage and early adult years. Acne sometimes is treated with omega 3 oils, sometimes referred to as omega 3 fatty acids.

    • The University of Maryland Medical Center says omega 3 oils are useful in treating skin disorders. It recommends taking flaxseed oil, a source of omega 3 oils, orally, in capsule or liquid form.

    Fish Oil

    • Cure-guide.com suggests a concentrated capsule of fish oil or a tablespoon of cod liver oil as a treatment for acne. Both are sources of omega 3 oils. Either form of oil is taken orally. According to the website, essential fatty acids act lubricate the body. allowing it to rid itself of toxins in skin pores.

    Dietary sources

    • Many fish contain omega 3 oils and are a good dietary source of essential fatty acids. Some species, however--including swordfish, mackerel and shark--can contain high levels of mercury. Pregnant and nursing women, and children, should limit their intake of these foods.

    Supplements

    • Omega 3 dietary supplements are sold commercially. Make sure the oils are prepared by a quality lab and certified mercury free.

    Omega 3 Oils and Hormone Related Acne

    • In his book book "Alternative Cures," Bill Gottlieb suggests a prepared fatty oil supplement, which he says impacts hormonal balance, as an acne treatment for women who have breakouts related to their menstrual cycle.
