Wild Rose Hips Side Effects

Wild rose hips are the round structures found below the petals of a rose that contain the flower's seeds. Despite their use by herbal practitioners to treat colds, infections and fevers, rose hips pose a risk for side effects in some people.
  1. General Side Effects

    • Possible side effects of wild rose hips include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach cramps, fatigue, headache and insomnia.

    Excessive Vitamin C

    • Since wild rose hips also contain Vitamin C, you should exercise caution when combining the herb with any other Vitamin C supplements. Excessive doses of Vitamin C pose a risk for kidney stones, inflammation of the stomach lining, faintness, dizziness and fatigue, the Mayo Clinic cautions.

    Drug Interactions

    • Wild rose hips pose an increased risk for serious side effects if you also take estrogen supplements or the mood-stabilizing drug lithium. When taken with the blood-thinning drug warfarin, wild rose hips increase your risk for developing prolonged or uncontrollable bleeding following an injury, accident or medical procedure.

    Allergies

    • Though uncommon, some patients develop severe allergic reactions to wild rose hips, particularly if the herb is inhaled, according to RxList.com.

    Considerations

    • If you are pregnant or nursing or if you have a history of sickle-cell anemia, diabetes, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, hemochromatosis, thalassemia or iron-related anemia, it may not be safe for you to use wild rose hips, according to RxList.com.
