Allergic Reactions to Valerian Root
Valerian is a popular medicinal herb, commonly used as a treatment for anxiety, insomnia and restlessness. While there are no documented case reports of people suffering allergic reactions to valerian, hypersensitivity is theoretically possible.-
Effects
-
Symptoms of valerian allergy are similar to other allergies. They may include rash, sneezing, itching or diarrhea. In serious cases, anaphylaxis may occur.
Warning
-
Call 911 or go the nearest emergency room if you experience symptoms of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms may include wheezing, hives, delirium, difficulty breathing, vomiting and palpitations.
Considerations
-
Allergies can occur with almost any type of plant. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Centers for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) do not report any medically documented cases of valerian allergy.
Misconceptions
-
Some people are unusually sensitive to the sedative effects of valerian. However, this is considered to be a hypersensitivity, not a true allergy.
Minimizing Risk
-
Use caution when taking valerian if you have a known history of allergies to any food, plant or medicine. Tell your health care provider about any medicinal herbs that you are using.
