How to Infuse Red Clover Blossoms?

Herbal infusions are made by steeping the herb's leaves or flowers in boiling water. Infusions are suitable for preparing delicate herbs that are easily exhausted of their medicinal properties, such as red clover blossoms. Red clover infusions have been used traditionally for treating fever, Bright's disease, menopausal symptoms, respiratory problems and externally for skin conditions such as eczema. This recipe yields approximately 1 quart of red clover blossom infusion, but it may be doubled to make a larger batch if necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 1 to 2 ounces of dried red clover blossoms or 2 to 4 ounces of fresh red clover blossoms using a kitchen or herb scale. Place the flowers in a clean, glass quart-sized canning jar.

    • 2

Bring 1 quart of water to a boil in a saucepan. Remove the pan from the heat and pour the boiling water over the red clover blossoms in the jar. Stir well and make sure the herbs are completely covered with water.

    • 3

Cover the canning jar by placing the lid on top loosely or placing a small saucer over the top of the jar. Allow the red clover blossoms to steep in the hot water for 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 4

Uncover the jar and pour the red clover blossom infusion through a piece of cheesecloth or muslin into a clean jar or mugs if you'll be consuming the beverage right away. Discard the spent herbs in the compost pile or garbage bin.

    • 5

Cover the infusion and store in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours, or sweeten lightly with honey and drink immediately. Drink 1 to 4 cups of red clover blossom infusion per day, depending on the condition being treated.
