Anti Inflammatory Herbs
Inflammation is our body's natural reaction to an injury or infection. It alerts us that something wrong in our bodies, and lets us know that we need to slow down before we risk further injury. Inflammation can cause pain, redness, loss of joint function and stiffness in the joints. There are many natural herbs that can help fight inflammation.-
Turmeric
-
Take 400 to 600 mg of turmeric three times a day for help with inflammation. Turmeric contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and can be taken long term. Typically it takes several months to feel the effects of turmeric. This makes it an excellent long-term treatment for arthritis and other chronic conditions.
St. John's Wort
-
Use 500 mg of St. John's Wort every day for swelling. This herb is often used to help fight depression but has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Higher dosages can be taken but you should be evaluated for treatment when you increase the dosage. Your physician can recommend the proper dose for you.
White Willow Bark
-
Substitute white willow bark in place of other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. White willow bark acts in much the same way that aspirin does on pain because it contains salicin, which is very similar to the acetylsalicylic acid in aspirin. Take 50 mg two to three times per day as needed for inflammation.
Tea Tree Oil
-
Mix 1/8 tsp. of tea tree oil with your other herbs for an extra boost of anti-inflammatory properties. Tea tree oil is safe and effective and can be taken in a glass of water twice a day. You can generally begin to feel results immediately after taking tea tree.
Bromelain
-
Eat fresh pineapple as often as you like and drink pineapple juice. This tropical fruit contains a natural anti-inflammatory property called bromelain. Chewable bromelain tablets can be purchased at your local health food store and can be taken as needed for inflammation. You may experience side effects such as nausea and diarrhea if you take too many tablets, so should talk to your healthcare provider about the right dosage for you.
