How to Treat Iritis With Natural Supplements & Herbs

Iritis, also referred to as uveitis, is an inflammation of the uvea in the iris of the eye. Iritis can be caused by blunt trauma to the eye, systemic diseases or viruses. Its symptoms range from pain and redness to glaucoma and cataracts. Iritis is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute iritis can heal on its own in a few weeks, or if treatment is provided it can heal significantly faster. Chronic iritis, on the other hand, can exist for months or years and does not respond well to treatment. Those suffering from chronic iritis should consult a physician as visual impairment is a risk. In either case, treatment with pharmaceutical steroids is recommended for the underlying condition, but you can treat some of the symptoms at home with natural herbs.

Apply a small amount of the herb arnica to the closed eyelids, or make a warm compress with it. Arnica is renowned for its healing and pain-reliving qualities, according to AnniesRemedy.com. You can find it in a cream at your local health foods store. Be sure to test for any allergic reaction first by applying a small amount to the inside of your forearm and waiting 24 hours to check for irritation.

Put tea bags on your eyes. Tea works well to relieve tired, achy eyes. Try dipping two black or chamomile tea bags in warm water and then place one over each eye for 20 minutes. Do this as often as need to relieve discomfort.
