Home Remedy Bleach for Nail Fungus

Nail fungus, referred to as onychomycosis, occurs when fungi infect one or more nails. It might start out as a white or yellow spot under the fingernails or toenails, and later as discoloration, crumbled edges or unsightly appearance as the fungi spread deeper into the infected nails. These infections can continue for a long time if not treated properly. Use bleach as one of the cheapest, most effective ways to treat this condition.
  1. Symptoms

    • Nail infection might be a result of onychomycosis or onycholysis. Onychomycosis is present usually when one or more nails are thickened, brittle or crumbled. Symptoms of onycholysis are nail separation from the nail bed. Patients might experience pain as well as smell a foul odor.

    Cause

    • Nail fungal infections are normally caused by fungi called dermatophytes. They can also be a result of yeast and molds, which thrive in warm, moist places such as showers and swimming pools. These microorganisms invade your toenails or fingernails in various ways. They can penetrate the skin through separation of the nail from the nail bed or through tiny invisible cuts. Nail infections are more prevalent in the toenails. This is due to the dark, moist, and warm location, plus the diminished blood circulation in comparison to the finger nails. As a result, it is difficult for the immune system to locate and halt the infection.

    Nail Fungus Treatment

    • Combine one part bleach with ten parts water, and soak the infected nails for approximately 30 minutes daily. This will kill the microorganism that created the fungus. Cut and file the infected nail, making it easier for the bleach solution to penetrate the infection. As fungus infections are difficult to cure, it might take several weeks for this condition to clear up, so don't expect results overnight. Practice due diligence as well; if you stop the treatment too soon, the infection will return.

    Side Effects

    • Chlorine bleach is a harsh product, and can cause irritation. Also, it can bleach or spot your clothing. Exercise precaution when using bleach by thoroughly rinsing hands and feet with water after each use and keeping dark clothes from getting splashed by bleach.

    Prevention

    • Steps to keep nail fungus at bay or diminish recurrent infections include practicing good hand and foot hygiene as well as keeping your nails short, clean and dry.

    Warning

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, patients who have other underlying health problems such as diabetes or a weakened immune system should consult their health-care provider if they have a nail fungus, as it can indicate a more serious condition.
