Flavanol antioxidants are part of a group of chemicals known as polyphenol antioxidants. Most often referred to as flavanols, the substance is found in its highest concentration in cocoa and to a lesser extent in processed chocolate products. In a Dutch study quoted by UABHealth.org, flavanols lowered blood pressure and reduced the chance of heart disease.

According to the Hershey Company, natural cocoa powder has the highest concentration of flavanol. Unsweetened baking chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate follow, in that order, as flavanol sources.

According to a Feb. 9, 2005 Washington Post article, the flavanol in chocolate reduces blood clotting and inflammation. Other studies have found flavanol to have an effect on sun sensitivity.
