Herbal Supplement for Anger

Many of the same herbs that are used to treat depression and anxiety can be used successfully to treat anger. Unlike prescription drugs, which are often prescribed only for extreme cases of mental debilitation, herbal remedies can help you feel better if you are struggling with anger, stress and malaise from dealing with daily life.
  1. St. John's Wort

    • Chemicals in the flowering herb St. John's wort seem to inhibit enzymes that tear apart the brain chemicals that make you feel good. "The Book of Herbal Home Remedies" suggests taking 300 mg of St. John's wort between meals three times a day. St. John's wort is also available in tincture form; look for tincture that is blood red in color. If you would rather take St. John's wort in tea form, use 1 tsp. of the dried herb in 8 oz. of boiling water and steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink a cup of the tea three times a day.

Like prescription antidepressants, St. John's wort may take several weeks to work. You can take it as long as you like. Check with your doctor before taking it if you are already taking an antidepressant.

    Green Oats

    • The expression "sowing your wild oats" is derived from the invigorating effects of green oats. If you are experiencing anger combined with low energy, green oats can offer a solution. Green oats are available in tincture form. Take 1 tsp. of the tincture in 1 cup of water twice daily. You can find green oats tincture in most health food stores.

    Chamomile

    • Chamomile tea has long been known to have calming effects. Drink 1 cup of the tea three times a day to relax. The active ingredient in chamomile, apigenin, has strong anti-anxiety effects. Drink your last cup of chamomile tea at night to help ease you to sleep. Make a chamomile tea with 2 tsp. of dried chamomile flower in a mug, pour in 8 oz. of boiling water, cover and steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Chamomile is safe to use on a long-term basis.

    Passionflower

    • Another popular herbal remedy for dealing with feelings of anger and anxiety is passionflower. It is available in tincture or tea form. Look for the tincture in health food stores. Follow dosing instructions carefully. Dried passionflower may also be available in well-stocked health food stores. Make a tea with 1 tsp. of dried passionflower in an 8-oz. mug; pour over 1 cup of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink three times a day. It is best taken as a medicinal tea during times of stress and not on a daily basis for a long time.

    Tips

    • In addition to trying herbal solutions for anger, make sure you are getting enough rest and exercise and are eating a healthful diet. While some herbs can provide relief from everyday symptoms of anger, depression and anxiety, if you continue to feel overwhelmed, consult your physician for other treatment options.
