PCOS & Herbal Treatment

Polycystic ovary disease or PCOS is a condition that often affects women by causing irregular menstruation, scalp hair loss, hair growth on the body, acne, weight gain and other health problems. Although there is no cure for PCOS, there are herbal treatments and vitamins that may help reduce the symptoms of PCOS.
  1. Cinnamon Bark

    • Based on Chinese Herbal Theory, cinnamon bark powder is thought to help with digestive problems, including vomiting, nausea, cramping and diarrhea. Dried cinnamon bark helps to alleviate pain and blood stasis from having an irregular menstrual cycle or no menstrual cycle. Cinnamon bark enhances the insulin abilities and improves the body's ability to process sugar, which can result in lower body fat composition, and promote healthy levels of glucose.

    Fish Oil

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, fish oil contains fatty acids that are necessary for your body to maintain energy, healthy hormones and regulate hormone levels. If someone has a deficiency in fatty acids, fish oil can prevent problems with the nervous system, cardiovascular system and the immune.

    Vitamin B and Folic Acid

    • Vitamins can improve some of the side effects of PCOS and help the body control weight through B vitamins. According to the Mayo Clinic, biotin also improves the body's ability to metabolize glucose by stimulating insulin. Biotin is thought to improve the body's resistance to insulin and help to improve hair growth. Folic acid should be taken with vitamin B to improve neurological function.

    Iron

    • Women with PCOS may suffer from anemia because of heavy menstruation or the disease itself. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, anemia can also be related to deficient levels of Vitamin B12, so taking a multivitamin with iron can help to regulate iron in the body, but should be taken with vitamin C to help absorption.

    Chromium

    • According to the National Institute of Health, chromium can help reduce the body's resistance to insulin and can improve the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Although chromium is available in capsule form, it is also found in whole wheat breads, fresh fruit, chicken breast, liver, mushrooms and yeast.
