Calendula for Treating Varicose Veins

Calendula has been used for centuries to clean and disinfect wounds, and reduce swelling and inflammation. Soldiers used it to pack wounds and to stop the bleeding during the Civil War. Calendula is sometimes used to treat varicose veins, which is a condition that can be painful and embarrassing.
  1. How Does Calendula Work?

    • Calendula can be used externally and can be made into an oil or added to lotions and creams as a healing agent. It can be used to treat skin rashes; wounds; for tooth infections and toothaches; hemorrhoids and varicose veins. Calendula cream reduces swelling and inflammation and can regenerate weak and damaged veins. It also enhances circulation.

    Making the Cream

    • Calendula can be found at health food stores. Some stores carry the dried herb in stock. If not, it can be ordered and usually costs about $25 for a large bag (2 or 3 lbs).

There are several ways to use the dried calendula. The easiest way is to make a tea. Boil 2 to 3 cups of distilled water on the stovetop and add half a cup to 1 cup of dried calendula flowers. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes and then strain. Turmeric will also naturally reduce swelling and cayenne pepper and ground cloves will numb the pain. Add 1 to 2 tsp. of each to the mixture.

This herb and spice mixture (without the water) can also be steeped in grape seed or olive oil for two weeks. The oil can be strained so that no debris remains.

The calendula tea or oil mixture (when completed) can be added in small amounts to lotions, hand soaps and body soaps, or the oil can be applied directly.

    Treating Varicose Veins

    • Apply either a lotion or the oil directly to the area where the varicose veins are located. Wrap the area in a bandage and allow to remain in place overnight. This process is referred to making a poultice. For individuals who don't want to go through the process of making an oil or a tea, the calendula can be mixed directly with a small amount of water or oil to create a fast poultice mixture and then wrapped in a bandage or cheesecloth, again leaving overnight. Other spices, such as cayenne pepper, cloves and turmeric, can be added to the homemade paste. Apply each night for up to two weeks.
