Strep B Herbal Treatment
Antibiotics are generally reserved for high-risk cases and not given to every woman who tests positive for group B strep (GBS). Some women even choose to take herbal treatments on their own, and many midwives and holistic doctors are equipped to help with this.-
Oregon Grape Root
-
A tincture of Oregon grape root can be purchased through most natural midwifery programs and is designed to kill staph and strep bacteria. Virginia Homebirth Midwifery suggets six drops daily throughout pregnancy.
Garlic
-
Bruise two garlic cloves and insert them into the vagina at night before bed. Do this every other night during pregnancy until delivery. Garlic is a powerful antibacterial. Eating three or four raw garlic cloves daily will have the same effect.
Olive or Tea Tree Oil
-
Soaking a natural tampon with organic, high quality olive oil or tea tree oil, then inserting it into the vagina twice daily for a half hour each time will help reduce the bacteria colony in the vagina. This procedure may also be performed rectally.
Echinacea
-
Taking echinacea in tea, capsule or tincture form can help reduce the GBS colonization. Echinacea is well known for speeding the recovery from colds and is a potent antibiotic. It's also often mixed as a tincture containing peppermint or nettles.
Dandelion Root
-
Tinctures and capsules of dandelion root are available. It's high in vitamins A, C, D and B complex, as well as zinc, iron and potassium. Dandelion root helps build up the immune system to fight GBS, and can be used in conjunction with echinacea.
