How to Make Astragalus Tincture

Astragalus root has been used in Chinese medicine for about 2,000 years. The herb helps to strengthen the immune system, liver and heart. It is also considered an energy and lung tonic. Often, medicinal herbs like astragalus with tonic qualities are made into tinctures so that they can be used on a regular basis. Tonics are typically used as a preventative measure against sickness.

Things You'll Need

  • Dried astragalus root
  • Knife
  • 1/2 pint mason jar
  • 80 proof or higher vodka
  • Cheesecloth
  • Bowl

Instructions

      Chop your astragalus root as fine as possible with your knife. Fill your mason jar at least 1/3 full.

      Pour your vodka over the astragalus root until it is 2 inches above the herb.

      Cover your jar with the lid and shake it well. Put your tincture in a cool and dark location.

      Shake your tincture once a day for 8 weeks, and then place it back in a dark and cool location.

      Strain out the astragalus root by pouring your tincture through a cheesecloth into a bowl. Store your tincture in your mason jar, label the jar and keep it in a dark and cool location.

      Use 1 tsp. of your astragalus tincture in a cup of tea or water. You can take your tincture up to three times a day.
