Herbal Care for Dry Eyelids

Dry eyelids can be extremely uncomfortable and may impede someone's day-to-day lifestyle. In some extreme cases, the condition will become very unattractive. The eyes are extremely sensitive and it's important to be careful about what we use on them. There are many herbal cures that work wonders for improving dry eyelids and that are also safe and effective treatments.
  1. First Steps of Treatment

    • The first step before any herbal tinctures or remedies can be applied is to rinse your eyes out with warm water. Gently pat your eyes dry. Dampen a wash cloth with warm water. Fold the wash cloth in half and put two or three drops of chamomile essential oil on the inside of one of the halves. Halve lengthwise again so that you have a long, thin layer of wash cloth. Lay down on your back comfortably (or recline in a comfortable chair) and gently place the wash cloth over your closed eyes, making sure that none of the oil gets in your eyes. Rest for 5 to 10 minutes before removing the cloth. This can be done once a day to help with eye dryness. The combination of essential oils and warm moisture from the cloth will naturally help to re-moisten the eyes.

    Lavender Oil

    • Add approximately ¾ of a cup of warm water to an empty bowl. Add two to three drops of organic lavender essential oil to the water. Mix the oil and water together well. Dip two cotton balls in the mixture, squeezing out the excess liquid. Place a cotton ball on each closed eyelid and relax. The diluted lavender will help replace lost oil in the eyes.

    Tea

    • Tea is also helpful to the eyes. There are a couple different methods of using tea with eyes. The first method involves brewing tea as you normally would to drink (black tea works the best, but you can also use chamomile or lavender tea). Soak two cotton balls in the warm tea until completely saturated with tea. Place the saturated cotton ball on each eye while lying down. Allow the cotton tea balls to soak on the eye lids for five minutes. Remove and discard.

The other method is to brew tea using two tea bags. Allow the bags to cool slightly and place the bags directly on your closed eyes. Make sure that the bags are not too hot. This will help reduce puffy eyes while moisturizing.
