Grapefruit Seed Extract & Fungal Infections

Grapefruit seed extract is a substance derived from the seeds and other parts of grapefruits. The liquid is fairly popular in natural medicine and is often used to treat bacterial and fungal infections in humans.
  1. Fungal Infections

    • Fungal infections can occur in mucous membranes, the lungs, the sinuses and on the skin. Athlete's foot and vaginal yeast infections are common types of fungal infection. Antifungal medications should be used to treat this type of infection.

    Effect on Fungus

    • Research has shown that many different strains of yeast are sensitive to grapefruit seed extract. Therefore, grapefruit seed extract may be effective against some types of fungal infections.

    Effect on Bacteria

    • Salmonella responds especially well to grapefruit seed extract, even in low concentrations of the extract. Grapefruit seed extract had a similar effect on various other strains of bacteria at higher concentrations.

    Synthetic Components

    • Research suggests that it may be the presence of synthetic preservatives in grapefruit seed extract--and not inherent properties of natural grapefruit seed extract--that has an antimicrobial effect.

    Warning

    • Grapefruit juice and grapefruit seed extract may have interactions with some medications, including cholesterol-lowering drugs and drugs for depression. Consult with your doctor before trying any natural remedies.
