Proteolytic Enzymes Fact Sheet

Proteolytic enzymes are produced naturally in the body. Bromelain, trypsin, pancreatin, papain and chymotrypsin are types of proteolytic enzymes available as herbal supplements.
  1. Uses

    • Proteolytic enzymes are used to aid with digestion. According to iHerb, limited clinical studies have shown effectiveness in treating symptoms associated with hepatitis C, high cholesterol, inflammation, viral infections and cancer.

    Features

    • Some forms of proteolytic enzymes can be found in pineapple stems (bromelain) and papaya (papain). Others such as trypsin and chymotrypsin are present in the pancreas of animals.

    Significance

    • A deficiency of proteolytic enzyme is a possible cause of symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, flatulence, stomach upset, nutritional malabsorption (problems digesting nutrients) and inability to digest foods properly.

    Interactions

    • Taking proteolytic enzymes with certain medications increases the potential of causing an adverse reaction or reducing the effectiveness of the medication. Consult with a physician prior to starting treatment with this supplement, especially when taking blood thinners and sedatives.

    Fun Fact

    • According to Kiwi Web, the history of proteolytic enzymes dates to 1920. Germany initially tried using these enzymes as an additive in washing powders with only moderate success. Switzerland attempted to perform the same test in the 1930s with no luck either.
