Herbal Treatments for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition that affects the optic nerve. The nerve cells in the front of the optic nerve start to die and can't be regenerated. Glaucoma is typically caused by interocular pressure (IOP) caused by improper draining of fluid from the eye. Some people who suffer from glaucoma don't have increased IOP, and the cause of their condition is idiopathic (unknown). Some herbal remedies can assist with managing glaucoma.
  1. Types

    • Herbs recommended for glaucoma include gingko biloba, pansy, oregano, bilberry and shepherd's purse.

    Fun Fact

    • Pilocarpine, a commonly prescribed conventional medication for glaucoma, is actually derived from the South American tropical tree, the jaborandi. Jaborandi is available as a supplement at many health food stores.

    Considerations

    • Though not strictly herbal, Vitamin C can lower IOP and is easily found in several fruits and vegetables, such as bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, citrus fruits, strawberries, guava, kale and papaya,

    Antioxidants

    • Antioxidants are important to treat glaucoma. Antioxidants are compounds that counter free radicals, the scavengers that destroy and damage cells. Turmeric, grape seed extract, resveratrol, garlic, green tea, gingko biloba and Asian ginseng all contain high levels of antioxidants.

    Warning

    • Sanguinarine, a compound found in bloodroot, can hasten the progression of glaucoma. Bloodroot is sometimes used in toothpastes and mouthwashes because it is beneficial for gum disease. Read the ingredients carefully to make sure your dental products are bloodroot-free.
