How to Prepare Cut Valerian Root

Valerian is a popular herb used as a sleep aid and a mild sedative that generally has few side effects other than the occasional allergic reaction. In the United States, it's sold as a dietary supplement and very easy to acquire. Many people also grow valerian and harvest its roots in the fall for teas, tinctures, compresses, and other medicinal uses. Once cut, valerian can be prepared and kept for up to three or four months in an airtight container and used as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the slices of cut valerian root on a window screen, cookie sheet, or other porous flat surface where they can get plenty of ventilation all around. Make sure the slices aren't touching or overlapping.

    • 2

Cover them with a thin muslin or cheesecloth. You want to keep bugs and birds away, but you want the moisture to be able to escape.

    • 3

Let them sit for up to two weeks to fully dry. Thinner slices will dry faster.

    • 4

Once dry, they are ready to be used. You can store them in jars for up to three to four months in a cool, dark place.
