Jaundice Remedies
The University of Maryland Medical Center describes jaundice as a yellowing of the skin, eyes or mucous membranes. The color that is associated with this condition is caused by bilirubin, which is a byproduct from retired red blood cells. Jaundice is more common among newborn infants, as the birthing process can cause an exponential amount of red blood cell retirement; however, there are other conditions that can cause jaundice in adults. Prior to starting any jaundice remedy, speak with your physician to make sure it is safe, especially if you have a medical complication causing this condition.-
Milk Thistle-Liver Support
-
The origin of jaundice is an accumulation of bilirubin within the body, which is caused by the liver;s inability to successfully filter out broken down blood cells. Because bilirubin has a yellow pigment, it causes the skin and other tissues to take on a yellow hue. Milk thistle is commonly used to treat those who have liver disorders or complications due to excessive alcohol and other liver damaging toxins. By supporting the function of the liver, this organ will be able to efficiently filter bilirubin out of the body. Prior to consuming milk thistle, speak with your doctor to ensure its safety, especially if you have encountered previous health conditions that may be causing the jaundice. Never give milk thistle to an infant before discussing this treatment option with the child's physician.
Milk thistle is available in capsule and liquid extract forms. For adults 18 years and older, consume 200 to 400 mg of milk thistle up to three times per day with 8 oz. of water. Due to the strong taste of this herb, capsule form is the easiest method of consumption.
Herbal Tincture
-
According to David L. Hoffman, president of the American Herbalist Guild and director of the California School of Herbal Studies, a common remedy for jaundice involves making a tincture out of several herbs that work to support the function of the liver and the entire body. The ingredients within this tonic include dandelion root, vervain, milk thistle, boldo and fringetree bark extracts; all of which can be purchased at any herbal supply store. These compounds work as hepatics and bitters for liver function support as well as anti-pruritics to reduce skin itching.
To create this tonic, mix 2 tsp. of dandelion root, 1 tsp. of milk thistle, fringetree bark, vervain and boldo into a container. Mix these ingredients together and consume up to three times per day. Speak with your doctor before you consume this tincture to ensure these ingredients are safe for you to consume.
