Bee Balm Vs. Lemon Balm

Bee balm and lemon balm are two varieties of herbal plants. Although bee balm has medicinal properties, it is most commonly used as an additive to recipes. Lemon balm is a member of the mint plant family. This herb is suggested for use individually or in conjunction with other herbs to relieve various discomforts.

    Bee Balm

    • Bee Balm is native to Eastern North America and blooms large colorful flowers. The flowers are edible and commonly used as salad garnishes, or to flavor food while cooking.

    Lemon Balm

    • Lemon balm is native to Europe and grows in clusters of light yellow flowers. It is a calming herb used to ease digestive discomfort, reduce stress and promote sleep. The dried leaves of lemon balm are sold as tea.

    • Oswego tea is the red variety of bee balm. After the Boston tea party, colonists began drinking it in place of English tea.

    • Lemon balm supplements are made out of oils extracted from the leaves. Essential oil of lemon balm contains the plant chemicals Terpenes and Eugenol. Terpenes provide the herbs calming effect, and Eugenol helps reduce feelings of discomfort.
