Gum Arabic is the hardened sap from the flowering acacia plant. The gum is commonly used in alternative medicine.

    Uses

    • Gum Arabic is sometimes used to lower cholesterol levels. It is also used in a food additive in sodas, candies and medications as well as in textile manufacturing and as an ingredient in pesticides, glues, baking soda and laundry detergent.

    Geography

    • Gum Arabic is native to Africa, but grows in other areas as well, such as California and Australia.

    Risks

    • Gum Arabic has the potential to cause gas, bloating and loose stools when used as a supplement. It is also possible to experience an allergic reaction to Gum Arabic supplements or foods that contain acacia, though this is very rare.
