Side Effects of Sitosterol

Sitosterol, or beta-sitosterol, is an extract from plants, fruits and vegetables. Despite its effectiveness in lowering cholesterol and treating prostate enlargement, sitosterol poses a risk for side effects in some people.
  1. Types of Side Effects

    • Common side effects of sitosterol include nausea, indigestion, gas, diarrhea and constipation.

    Drug Interactions

    • Cholesterol medications like Zetia and Pravachol reduce the effectiveness of sitosterol, according to RxList. Consult your doctor before taking sitosterol with one of these medications as you may suffer side effects without gaining any benefits from the supplement.

    Restrictions

    • Sitosterol is harmful to patients with a rare genetically-inherited disease known as sitosterolemia that affects the way the body stores fat. If you have high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, ask your doctor if sitosterol is a safe supplement for you.

    Risks

    • Some men may experience impotence or loss of libido while using sitosterol.

    Considerations

    • Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, avoid using sitosterol if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor before using the supplement while nursing.
