Herbs for Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder can disrupt your life and make you feel isolated and embarrassed. It is important to discuss an overactive bladder with your doctor. This condition can sometimes be caused by a more serious problem, such as interstitial cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder wall. A good diet and drinking lots of water will help, but there are also some herbal remedies available.
  1. Symptoms

    • One symptom of an overactive bladder is a sudden, urgent need to urinate. This may be followed by a loss of bladder control, called incontinence. Sometimes the loss of control is minor, but can also be major, causing embarrassment and leading to isolation. If you find yourself going to the bathroom many times during the night, or frequently using the restroom during the day, you may be experiencing an overactive bladder.

    Pumpkin Seed

    • Pumpkin has been valued for its restorative properties for hundreds of years. The seeds of pumpkins contain phytoesterol, a compound that helps restore health to the prostate in men, and contributes to bladder health in women. Eating pumpkin seeds regularly will help you gain control of your bladder.

    Marshmallow Root

    • Marshmallow root tea can help soothe an overactive bladder. Soak the root in water overnight, then drink the marshmallow-infused liquid. Or cut up a few chinks, pour boiling water over them and steep for half an hour. Honey may be added to sweeten the tea. Marshmallow root is very gentle, and the tea can be drank many times a day as needed. Don't confuse marshmallow root with marshmallows found in the grocery store. Most commercial marshmallows contain no actual mallow.

    Saw Palmetto

    • Saw palmetto is also known to help alleviate the symptoms and discomfort of an overactive bladder. However, saw palmetto does have a hormonal effect on the body, and is therefore not recommended for women. Prostate problems are positively affected by saw palmetto, which is available at most health food stores.
