Bitter Melon
-
Bitter melon, which can be found in Asian supermarkets, is one of the best herbs for treating diabetes. Eating bitter melon increases the insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas called beta cells. It is also thought to regulate blood sugar levels by slowing the absorption of glucose. Make a juice of the melon and mix it with enough water to make it palatable. Drink two ounces twice a day. You can take bitter melon indefinitely.
Asian Ginseng
-
Asian ginseng is used in Chinese medicine to treat diabetes. It increases the release of insulin from the pancreas. Take a daily dose of 200 mg. to reap the full benefits.
Cinnamon
-
Cinnamon has strong blood-sugar-lowering properties. One of the simplest ways to consume cinnamon is by drinking cinnamon tea. Look for cinnamon tea bags in health food stores or make your own. Use three tbsps. of ground cinnamon and two tsps. of baking soda in one quart of boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes on medium to low heat. Remove from the heat, strain and place in refrigerator. Drink throughout the day, but aim to drink at least one quart daily for optimal results.
Bilberry
-
Bilberry is useful in preventing diabetic retinopathy. The leaves of this plant lower blood sugar levels, while the fruit contains high levels of flavonoids, making it a potent anti-oxidant that improves the circulation of blood in the eyes of diabetics. Take 80 mg. of bilberry extract twice a day to reduce your risk of retinopathy.
