Mullein is an expectorant and an anti-inflammatory and also has antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Identification

Mullein plants grow up to 7 feet tall, with oblong leaves between 2 and 12 inches long. The plant resembles a weed with hairy growths that are soft to the touch.
Mucilage

When combined with water, the fibrous texture of mullein softens and forms a compound called mucilage that coats the throat and stomach, making mullein a good herb for sore throats and indigestion.
Uses

Mullein is commonly used for colds and influenza, but also may be beneficial for more serious conditions, such as bronchitis and emphysema.
How To Take Mullein

You can obtain mullein as a tea or in capsules from the health food store. You can also grow your own mullein and use the leaves and flowers to make tea. Steep 1 to 2 tsps. of the dried herb in boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes.
