Herbal Remedies for Menopause Night Sweats

Menopause is a transitional time in a woman's life characterized by fluctuating hormone levels and sometime unbearable symptoms. The physical changes related to menopause are caused by precipitous drops in estrogen levels. One of the most common, and most annoying side effects of menopause is night sweats. Some herbs can help with night sweats, and harmonize fluctuating hormone levels, making the menopause transition a little easier.

    • Evening primrose oil helps to eliminate hot flashes and night sweats while encouraging a good nights rest. Evening primrose oil contains gamma linolenic acid which is believed to affect prostaglandin production. It is widely used to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and can also alleviate the tenderness that accompanies fibrocystic breast tissue. An effective dose is between 2 to 8 capsules per day. Follow directions on the bottle carefully. Look for evening primrose oil capsules in health food stores.

Black cohosh was first used by Native Americans to treat various female health issues. It is widely used in Germany as well to treat hormone disturbances. Black cohosh lowers levels of LH, or luteinizing hormone; this action helps minimize the occurrence of hot flashes and night sweats. Available in tincture form or teas, it is recommended to take in tincture form for best efficacy. Take 1/2 teaspoon 2 to 4 times daily. Take for 6 weeks, take a month off, then repeat the process.

Make a tea by combining 2 tsps. of dried sage with 1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and drink one to three cups daily. This is safe to use indefinitely.
