-
Bilberry
-
This berry is used to improve night vision, vision in dim light, vision sharpness, diabetic retinopathy, computer eye strain and cataracts. It works by strengthening the retina and blood vessels and increasing circulation. It contains anthocyanin, an antioxidant important to eye health. Dosages typically vary between 80mg and 160mg capsules three times a day.
Ginkgo Biloba
-
Ginkgo biloba improves circulation in the eye, macula and optic nerve. It also works to regulate pressure in the eye and is an antioxidant that is beneficial to the retina. Several studies have shown that individuals who took ginkgo biloba for several months experienced an improvement in vision. There have even been studies that found small improvements after just one month of use. Dosages range from 80mg to 240mg taken two or three times daily. Most gingko biloba teabags contain about 30mg.
Clove Oil
-
Clove oil contains a high concentration of eugenol, another powerful antioxidant that prevents macular degeneration, as well as the breakdown of the retina that typically occurs in aging eyes. Doctors recommend taking between 100 and 300mg daily, or two drops of clove oil in a glass of herbal tea two to three times per day.
Holy Basil
-
Also high in eugenol, holy basil contains vitamins A and C and helps relieve inflammation. It has also been known to heal damage caused by radiation. A typica dosage is between 300 and 600mg daily.
Wolfberry or Goji Berry
-
This berry is a Chinese remedy for blurred vision and other eye problems. It has one of the highest concentrations of zeaxanthin, which is very important in nourishing the macula. Wolfberries, also known as goji berries, are also full of carotenoids that are useful in preventing eye diseases and alleviating problems in eyes that are already damaged. There are no clear dosage recommendations.
Ask Your Doctor
-
It is also important to consult with your doctor before beginning any new nutrition plan, as most of these herbs have blood-thinning properties. In addition, even though herbs are natural substances they can still cause interactions, just as any drugs can.
