Natural Herbal Hair Loss Prevention

Hair loss is medically known as alopecia. While not life-threatening or debilitating, losing your hair can lead to serious emotional distress. Traditional treatments for hair loss often involve drugs or hair transplants, neither of which is very appealing. Herbal remedies used in supplements, shampoos or teas can help to alleviate the symptoms of hair loss for many people. As with any herbal treatment plan, results can vary widely. If you experience continuing hair loss, consult your physician for more conventional medical options.
  1. Algae Extract

    • Algae extract is derived from seaweeds or sea vegetables. They have high amounts of essential amino acids, along with minerals and vitamins. Specific seaweeds like Atlantic kelp and himanthalia elongata are targeted for use as remedies for hair loss. These seaweeds act as an antioxidant to help heal damage to the scalp and hair. They also provide a strong foundation for growing hair by infusing the scalp with important vitamins and amino acids. Look for seaweed hair shampoo formulations in health food stores, and use according to label instructions.

    Ginkgo Biloba and Green Tea

    • Ginkgo biloba is believed to assist with many conditions, including boosting the circulation of blood to the brain and skin. It is thought that the increase in blood to the brain and skin on the head delivers more nutrients to the hair, and promotes hair growth. This remains to be proven.

Green tea is a very popular herbal tea, which may help reduce the occurrence of male pattern baldness. Some believe that if you drink several cups of green tea a day, or take in supplement form, it can help prevent hair loss. Again, it remains to be proven.

    Saw Palmetto and Stinging Nettle

    • Saw palmetto is thought to slow down the progression of hair loss. It seems to promote regrowth of hair as well. Saw palmetto is available in tea form and supplements at most health food stores.

Stinging nettle has the capacity to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which is thought to be the main cause of hair loss in men. It can be purchased in supplement form, and is said to work best in conjunction with saw palmetto.

    Dong Quai and Ginseng

    • Dong quai is a traditional Chinese herb that is believed to prevent hair loss and may even cause regrowth of hair. Dong quai contains phytoestrogens, which limit the production of DHT.

Ginseng has been used in Asia for many years with known benefits such as boosting vascular circulation and directing cellular metabolism. These actions may boost hair growth in men. Look for ginseng in shampoos or other hair preparations.
