Astragalus Ear Infection
Ear infection, or otitis media, is common in children and babies. It is the inflammation infection of the middle ear and in most cases can clear up in a few days on its own. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are not good for treating ear infections, except for serious cases, and can cause more harm. Astragalus is a Chinese herb that contains anti-viral properties that is used as a natural cure to remedy ear infections and prevent recurrence.-
Causes
-
The causes of ear infections in children include exposure to fluid blockage in the ear from a cold, exposure to cigarette smoke, infection and swelling of adenoids in the throat, exposure to cold air and food allergies. Common allergens are wheat, citrus, eggs, chocolate, soy, shellfish, milk and corn---with dairy being thought to be the leading food allergen causing ear infections. Medications taken for cold or flu can also cause infections, such as antibiotics, aspirin and decongestants. The main cause in infants and children is because their immune system is not fully developed yet, which makes them more susceptible to the infection. Astragalus is a natural remedy that fortifies the immune system and rebuilds strength and resilience.
Symptoms
-
Indicators of an ear infection include your child pulling on her ear, crying more than usual, fever, fluid draining from her ears, irritability and trouble sleeping. Chronic ear infections can result in hearing loss, dizziness, ringing in the ears and fatigue. Astragalus herb is used as a preventative for persisting or reoccurring infections. You should take your child to a doctor immediately if she experiences lethargy, stiff neck, high fever or abnormal mental function.
Treatment
-
Astragalus root can be given to children in a liquid glycerine extract as it has a sweet flavor. Dry astragalus root also has an immune enhancing effect and can be boiled in soups and grain dishes. If left untreated, ear infections can lead to short- or long-term hearing loss, ruptured eardrum and the possibility for the infection to affect other parts of the head including the brain.
Safety
-
There are herbal medicines that are specifically made for children and are sold at natural food and health stores. Follow package directions and never give your child adult remedies as not all herbs are appropriate for child consumption. Herbal medicines are recognized as being safe remedies and astragalus is also used to fight the common cold.
Precautions
-
It is important to limit the intake of astragalus during a child's fever because the herb could prolong high temperatures. It should not be taken with corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs or with acyclovir or interferon.
