Kava Kava
-
The kava root has been used by Hawaiians for centuries in promoting anti-anxiety. It has even been used to replace alcohol for those who should not imbibe. Kava can be used to alleviate restlessness and promote sleep, and it can also be used to ease the tension in social or stressful situations. The active ingredient in kava is kavalactone, and the standardized extract is 30 percent. When used for anxiety, the recommended dosage is usually 250mg taken three times per day with meals. To induce sleep, 1,500mg can be taken at night.
Kava can impair your judgment when you take it at increased doses. You should not drive or operate heavy machinery when using this herb. Kava is considered a consciousness-altering substance and, as such, should be used responsibly and should not be abused.
Valerian
-
Valerian has been used to treat anxiety and sleeplessness for centuries and has been prescribed in medical annals as far back as the 2nd century. Valerian is available in capsule, tablet, tea and tincture form. The recommended dosage to take during the day is 150mg. The dosage at nighttime to induce sleep should start at 150mg and may increase to 600mg as needed. Although Valerian consumption is generally considered safe, it should not be used for prolonged periods of time and a two- to four-week break should be instituted at regular intervals.
Oatstraw Infusions
-
Oatstraw is very effective nourishment for the nervous system. Taking this herb in the form of an infusion can provide your nervous system with the support of a plethora of vitamins and minerals. Raw oatstraw can be purchased at reputable health food stores. Put one large handful (about 1 oz.) of oatstraw in a 1-qt. canning jar. Pour boiling water to the top of the jar and cap this with the seal and ring. Allow this to sit overnight and strain the liquid from the oatstraw in the morning. Sip on this drink throughout the day to provide stress relief. Any unused portion may be stored in the refrigerator, but it should be discarded after 36 hours because it will spoil. Additionally, oatstraw can be taken in tincture form at 1/2 tsp. three times per day.
