Bitter Melon
-
Bitter melon works on many levels in treating the complications from diabetes. Eating bitter melon increases the insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas known as beta cells. It helps to regulate blood sugar by slowing down the absorption of glucose. Drink 2 oz. of bitter melon juice twice a day. Look for bitter melon in Asian markets, then run the juice through a juicer or blender, blending it with a little water to make it more palatable.
Asian Ginseng
-
Ginseng is known as an herb that boosts vitality and makes you feel good. It also has the capability to stabilize blood sugar levels for Type 2 diabetes, or those who do not take insulin. Take a daily dose of 200 mg. in capsule form. Look for Asian ginseng in your health food store.
Cinnamon
-
Cinnamon contains a phytochemical that assists with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It helps with the utilization of blood sugar in the body. Drink 1 quart of cinnamon water daily for good results. While this may sound like a lot, simply make a batch of this pleasant tasting water, and drink it instead of your regular water throughout the day. Add 3 tbsp. of cinnamon and 2 tsp. of baking soda to 1 quart of boiling water, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Stain the tea and store in your refrigerator.
Flaxseed
-
Flaxseed improves the body's ability to metabolize blood sugar in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Aim to incorporate 2 tbsp. into your daily diet. Sprinkle it on your cereal, or mix it into baked good, drinks or oatmeal.
While herbal remedies can help lower blood sugar and alleviate some other symptoms of diabetes, it is important to receive conventional medical care for a disease as serious as diabetes.
