Herbal Ways to Treat Cystitis
Cystitis is commonly referred to as a bladder infection. The term cystitis can refer to a range of symptoms in the urinary tract, including infections and irritations. Symptoms of cystitis are burning upon urination, frequent urination, cloudy or foul- smelling urine, and blood in the urine. Women have short urethras, making them more susceptible to this type of infection.-
General Treatment
-
Treat a bladder infection or cystitis by consuming a lot of water. Water helps flush out the system and removes bacteria from the urinary tract. Alkalize the urine to help rid it of germs and soothe the bladder. Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to an 8-oz. glass of water, and drink it two or three times a day.
Cranberry juice is also an effective treatment for bladder infections. Good cranberry juice creates something called hippuric acid in the urine and acidifies the urine, preventing bacteria from clinging to the walls of the bladder. Look for 100 percent pure cranberry juice with no added sugar.
Corn Silk
-
Corn silk has been used in Europe for many years to treat bladder infections. It has strong diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Make an infusion by combining 1 cup of boiling water with 2 tsp. of dried corn silk. Let this mixture steep for between 10 and 15 minutes. As a medicinal tea, drink two to three times a day. Look for dried corn silk in health food stores.
Marshmallow Root
-
Marshmallow root is helpful in treating bladder infections. The roots of marshmallow are commonly used for digestive upset, because they contain high levels of mucilage, which are soothing compounds. Likewise, these compounds have a protective effect on the urinary tract in women. Look for mallow extract in your local health food store; it is available as a tea, in supplements or tincture form. Follow dosing instructions carefully.
Nettle
-
Nettle is another herb that is helpful in treating bladder infections. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Mix 1 tsp. of dried, crushed nettle leaves with 1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, allow to cool, and drink 1 tbsp. every other hour for relief. Avoid consuming more than 1 cup of this tea per day. Look for dried nettle in health food stores.
