Herbal Medicine for Acid Reflux

Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), or acid reflux, is a condition that causes stomach acids to back up (reflux) into the esophagus. The acids cause discomfort also referred to as heartburn. Inflammation and damage to the esophagus occur due to prolonged exposure to acids. The following are some herbal remedies used to relieve acid reflux. Consult with a physician before attempting self treatment of acid reflux using these herbal remedies.
  1. Chicory Root Tea

    • Chicory is a bitter herb made of escarole and endive. It is an herbal remedy recognized for its ability to reduce acid reflux. Boil 1 tbsp. of chicory root in 8 ounces of water for 10 minutes. Wait for the mixture to cool before drinking.

    Pineapple

    • Pineapples are rich in bromelain, an enzyme that reduces protein buildup. The enzymes aid in healing the esophageal lining. They also reduce inflammation and improve food digestion. They are an effective acid reflux herbal remedy. To get the maximum benefit of these enzymes, consume fresh pineapple and its juices

    Grapefruit

    • Organic grapefruit skin is a good acid reflux remedy. Peel and then shred the grapefruit's outer skin. Spread the skin evenly on a plate and allow it to completely dry. Store the dried skins in an airtight container. Chew and eat the skins when experiencing discomfort from acid reflux.

    Cinnamon

    • Cinnamon is an effective antacid and antiseptic. It has beneficial properties that control stomach acids that cause acid reflux. Cinnamon can be consumed by sprinkling in powder form on various foods or boiling to make a tea.

    Herbal Teas

    • Herbal teas help reduce the amount of stomach acids. They have been long used as an herbal remedy for acid reflux. Mix equal parts of peppermint, aniseed, and lavender herbs together. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over 1 tsp. of the herbal mixture. Filter the tea after letting it sit for 10 minutes. You can add honey to the tea for an extra soothing effect. For relief from reflux, drink a cup of herbal tea twice a day, preferably one cup in the morning and another at night before bedtime.

    Ginger

    • Ginger has properties that absorb excess stomach acids and so reduce acid reflux. It can be purchased at any health food store in capsule form. You can also boil 1/4 inch of ginger root in 8 ounces of water to make a tea. Ginger should be consumed immediately following dinner for best results.
