Yellow Root & Sinus Infection

Yellow root is a shrub native to North America with a history of medicinal use in folk remedies. It is a relative of the better-known herb goldenseal and sometimes used to either replace or as an additive to goldenseal, as yellow root is less expensive.
  1. History

    • Yellow root, Latin name Xanthorhiza simplicissima, belongs to the buttercup family, along with goldenseal. Both herbs have been used in Native American medicine to treat ailments of the upper respiratory tract.

    Function

    • Yellow root contains berberine, which provides the distinctive color for which the plant is named. Berberine has antimicrobial properties that make it useful in treating bacterial and fungal infections, such as those that afflict the sinuses.

    Types

    • Yellow root has traditionally been made into either a bitter tonic or a tincture, and sometimes brewed as a tea. Its cousin, goldenseal, is more readily available in various forms, from pills to salves.

    Benefits

    • Yellow root has been used to disinfect sores both externally and internally and can be used as a gargle to relieve sinus inflammation. It has also shown some ability to temporarily lower blood pressure.

    Warning

    • Yellow root should not be used during pregnancy, as it is a uterine stimulant. It can also be toxic in large doses and is recommended only for short term use.
