How to Make a Kidney Stone Pain Relief Compress

Recommended by Dr. Guillermo Asis, M.D., this kidney stone pain relief compress is a topical application that will make you much more comfortable while waiting for a kidney stone to pass. It uses heat and ginger's natural pain relieving properties to soothe what can be excruciatingly painful symptoms of passing a stone. Remember to always talk to your doctor if you think you have a kidney stone, and only turn to natural remedies when nothing else can be done. In most cases, waiting is the only cure for a kidney stone, which makes pain relief vital to getting through the ordeal.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill an 8-qt. pot with water and place over high heat. Bring the water to a rolling boil.

    • 2

Take a piece of fresh ginger root about the size of your palm and wrap it in a piece of cheesecloth. Tie a string around the cloth so that it looks like a large tea bag, and then lower it into the water for 2 to 3 minutes.

    • 3

Reduce the heat to medium, and then remove the ginger from the water by lifting it out with the string. Squeeze the bag over the water so that the softened ginger root's juice runs back into the pan. The juice from this ginger tea will provide extraordinary kidney stone pain relief, if prepared correctly.

    • 4

Remove the pan from the heat and soak a clean washcloth in the hot ginger-water. Remove and wring out thoroughly so the cloth is wet but not dripping. Make sure the cloth is not too hot before applying to the skin, or you may receive more pain instead of relief.

    • 5

Place the cloth on your lower back, where ever kidney stone pain relief is most needed, and then cover with a piece of plastic, such as cling wrap or a small trash bag. Place a dry towel on top of the plastic to complete the ginger compress.

    • 6

Allow the kidney stone pain relief compress to remain on the skin until it has cooled, and then repeat the application with hot ginger tea. You may reheat the tea, if necessary. Repeat the treatment as necessary, until the pain subsides or the kidney stone has passed.
