Old Diarrhea Remedies

Diarrhea is a condition in which the stool becomes loose and a large volume of fecal matter is released from the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, diarrhea causes the body to become depleted of water and salts, which may lead to dehydration if left untreated. While there are chemical treatments for diarrhea, natural remedies can provide relief just as readily. If the diarrhea lasts longer than four weeks, though, see your doctor, as this could be signs of a serious medical condition.
  1. Peppermint Extract

    • Peppermint extract is commonly utilized for its medicinal qualities, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Peppermint works to increase the movement of bile within the stomach. This increase of bile will allow foods to pass quickly through the system. If diarrhea is caused by irritable bowel syndrome, the properties within peppermint will work to relieve gas, bloating and diarrhea.

Peppermint is available in the form of dried leaves, which can be used to create a peppermint tea to ease an upset stomach. However, since diarrhea starts in the intestines, consuming peppermint extract capsules will provide even more relief by releasing this extract within the intestines. Ensure that the peppermint capsules are enteric-coated so they can be quickly passed through the stomach and down to the intestines. For diarrhea relief, take one to two capsules two times per day with 8 oz. of water.

    Psyllium Husk

    • Psyllium husk is derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant. The main property within psyllium is soluble fiber, which when ingested adds bulk to fecal matter. Since the main quality of diarrhea is loose stool, or excessive water, this herb is helpful because it will naturally soak up excess water to create bulkier feces. This slows the progression of stool through the intestinal tract, providing relief from constant diarrhea.

To begin treatment with psyllium, you will need to purchase psyllium seeds, which are available at any health food store. Add 1/2 tsp. psyllium seeds to 8 oz. warm water. Stir vigorously for 15 seconds and then quickly drink the mixture. Because psyllium naturally thickens when it is introduced to water, you must drink this remedy quickly, before it becomes too thick to comfortably consume. Drink this solution once a day until your diarrhea has ceased. Because psyllium may hinder the absorption of some medications, speak with your physician before trying this treatment.
