Alternative to Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye. It can result in mild to slight vision loss to causing the person to go blind if untreated. The general treatment for cataracts is surgery. Most people go for this option. However, there are alternative treatments that may be used to treat a cataract. They are potentially most effective in the early stages of cataracts.

How to Identify Cataracts

• People generally don't experience symptoms when the cataracts first begin to appear. Eye checks by optometrists are the best way to identify them and are therefore important. They do visual field tests and check the appearance of the optic nerve. The first symptoms are blurred patches in the peripheral vision or a dulling of colors. Headaches, eye pain, visual disruptions, and nausea can all be a sign of cataracts.

Dangers of Surgery

• Cataract surgery is generally safe and effective. However, it is a surgery and it does therefore have certain potential risks. Minor complications, such as double vision, wound leaks, pressure in the eye and clouded vision are usually treatable. Major complications are not common, but they may included inflammation, bleeding, or an allergic reaction to medication. These may be more difficult to treat.

Alternative Treatments

• There is some evidence to suggest that a change of diet can make a difference. Cutting down on or avoiding milk may be beneficial. Galactose, which is contained in milk, has been shown to promote cataracts in animals. Juicing may keep cataracts at bay since they can offer antioxidants, vitamins and minerals needed to fight off the molecules causing them. A riboflavin deficiency has been linked to cataract. Quercetin is a nutrient that is very good for the eyes. Vitamin E is the most recommended supplement for dog cataracts and is known to protect the eyes and boost their functions. Zinc is known to reverse eye conditions in dogs. Vitamin A is known as the "eye vitamin."

Ayurvedic Medicine

• Ayurveda is an ancient Indian form of healing. A common Ayurvedic remedy for cataracts is triphala tea, a combination of three fruits in powdered form. It can be found in most Indian pharmacies and some natural health stores. The eye is bathed in the tea three times per day.

No Testing on Humans

• It is important to remember that no alternative treatments have ever been officially tested on humans. Most of these theories come from research with dogs with general eye conditions. It may be worth trying alternative remedies if the cataracts are in the early stages. However, if they are advanced and impairing sight, surgery may be the more trusted option.
