Lower Bowel Cleansing Herbs
The function of the lower bowel or colon is to eliminate the body's waste and get rid of toxins form the blood, lymph system and intestines. Common problems include hemorrhoids, polyps (abnormal growths) and anal fissures. More serious problems, when left untreated, can lead to colon cancer. Cleansing the colon on a regular basis is beneficial for preventing these health issues.-
Psyllium Husks
-
Choose psyllium husk for a mild but effective colon cleanse. Psyllium husk comes from the plantain plant (Plantago psyllium). The husks or seed cases are a very good source of water-soluble fiber. As they pass through the digestive tract, they absorb water and expand to several times their initial size and become gelatinous. This helps to bulk up and soften your stool and keeps it moving through your colon, preventing constipation and build-up of toxins. Psyllium husks should be mixed with 8 to 16 ounces of water or juice and swallowed straight away. It is best taken between meals. While you are using psyllium, you should continue to drink six to eight glasses of water throughout the day. Side effects of using psyllium are uncommon but include vomiting, difficulty swallowing or breathing, abdominal pain, hives and chest pain. It should not be used for more than seven consecutive days.
Fennel Seed
-
Opt for fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) if you want to cleanse your colon ad simultaneously ease the symptoms of digestive problems. Fennel seed relaxes the intestinal muscles, so besides reducing cramping, it also provides relief from flatulence. Fennel seed is also a great source of fiber, so it will ease the passage of waste through your colon and prevent constipation and hemorrhoids. Fennel has a strong action on the digestive system, so it is not recommended for children and should not be taken long term by adults. Fennel seed should not be used while pregnant or breast-feeding.
Licorice Root
-
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used for decades as a treatment for constipation. It is a gentle colon cleanser and works by inhibiting muscle contractions in the digestive tract, and also helping the liver, blood and lungs to eliminate toxins. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe the lining of the colon and digestive tract. Suggested dosage varies between different preparations but should be between 60 and 200mg per day and should only be used for three to five weeks. Licorice root should not be taken if you are pregnant or suffer from high blood pressure or are taking diuretic, MAO inhibitors or blood thinners.
