Growing Eyebright

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is a wild flower native to Europe and introduced to North America. It can easily be grown in your garden or in pots and planters. It is an annual herb that has small, fringed green leaves and white flowers with a yellow center. Seeds should be planted in alkaline soil (add lime or dolomite) at a depth of one inch. Eyebright prefers semi-shade conditions and the soil needs to be kept moist. The plant should be harvested while young and fresh. You can cut the whole flowering stems and hang upside down in a brown paper bag to dry, after which it is ready to use in herbal preparations.
Herbal Preparation of Eyebright

Make an eyebright infusion by pouring boiling water over two to four grams of the dried, shredded herb and steeping for 20 minutes. After this time, strain and allow to cool. One cup can be taken internally two to three times daily. The same infusion may be used as an eyewash three to four times daily.

Eyebright is beneficial for the treatment of allergies because of its anti-catarrhal and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes is a good herb for relieving the buildup of mucus in the sinuses and nasal passages and also reducing inflammation of nasal tissue and mouth and throat. It also has a cleansing action on the liver and helps eliminates toxins from the blood supply. Eyebright can be used for the treatment of sinus and middle ear infections. It can also be used as an eyewash to treat inflammation and soreness caused by allergies and conjunctivitis.
Side Effects of Eyebright

Though uncommon, eyebright may cause side effects such as nausea and sweating. If you experience these symptoms you should stop taking it immediately and speak to your physician. It should not be used if you are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you wear contact lenses.
