Herbs for Itchy Flaky Scalp
An itchy, flaky scalp can be attributed to a multitude of causes. Diet, genetics, hormonal issues and illness may all play a part. In many cases, there are deficiencies in necessary vitamins and fatty acids have been directly linked to scalp problems. Several medicated shampoos are available that specifically target itchy and flaky scalp issues, but unfortunately these same products have been known to be counterproductive, leaving the scalp irritated. However, there are a wide range of alternative methods to be considered, such as herbs and home remedies that will help alleviate flaky and itchy scalp issues naturally.-
Tea Tree Oil

Used for centuries as an antiseptic, tea tree oil works as an effective agent in eliminating dandruff and scalp itchiness. In recent years, tea tree oil has become so well-known in battling scalp problems that several shampoos have added the herb. Look for shampoos that contain at least five percent tea tree oil and wash your hair as you would normally. Alternately, 1 tsp. of tree tea oil may be added to 32 oz. of shampoo.
Primrose Oil

Herbs rich in fatty acids help naturally add moisture to the scalp, which in turn alleviates itchiness and dryness. Evening primrose oil is enriched with gamma-linolenic acid, a fatty acid that is beneficial in reducing and removing dandruff flakes, dryness and scalp irritations. Take two 500-mg capsules of evening primrose oil three times per day.
Horsetail Herb

Two extremely important minerals for a healthy scalp are zinc and silica. Horsetail herb contains not only silica and zinc but is also full of other minerals such as potassium, calcium and manganese. Making tea is the easiest way to use horsetail. Add 2 to 3 g of horsetail herb to a pot of boiling water. Let the mixture boil for five to seven minutes. Cool the mixture for at least 15 minutes before straining and consuming. You can drink the tea three times a day in between meals.
