Garlic As Treatment for Hookworm

Garlic has long been used to treat intestinal parasites. Fresh garlic and garlic oil are effective in treating hookworms.
  1. History

    • Ancient cultures--Chinese, Greeks, Romans, Indians, and Babylonians--used garlic to treat hookworms and other intestinal parasites. One method was to place the garlic cloves in shoes. This crushed the garlic, and the oil was absorbed directly into the skin.

    Allicin

    • The active component of garlic is allicin. It is produced when garlic is crushed or chewed.

    Recommended Dosage

    • Two to three fresh cloves of garlic should be chewed either in the morning or the evening. One tablespoon every morning of garlic oil is an effective treatment.

    Topical Application

    • Garlic oil can be applied topically and will work just as effectively as taking it internally. This works well for those who cannot ingest garlic.

    Garlic as a Preventative

    • Garlic can be used as a preventative for hookworms and other intestinal parasites. Try adding garlic to your diet by using it in cooking.
