Herbs for Thyroid Function

When the thyroid gland isn't working properly, it can cause a number of physical ailments. If the thyroid produces too many of its hormones---known as triiodothyronine and thyroxine---you might suffer from fatigue, weight loss, anxiousness, heat sensitivity, irregular heart rhythms and swelling in the neck. Conversely, if the gland fails to produce enough hormones, you can experience fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, constipation, dry skin, high blood pressure or cholesterol, aches, stiffness, weakness and depression.   1. Kelp

    • Kelp is rich in nutrients and contains iodine, which helps regulate thyroid function. The thyroid absorbs iodine and cannot produce hormones without it.

    Bladderwrack

    • Bladderwrack also contains iodine. If you take kelp to support thyroid function, it is not necessary to also take bladderwrack, since they serve the same function.

    Tyrosine

    • Tyrosine helps the body convert iodine into thyroid hormones, and when taken in supplement form, it increases the production of those hormones. Without an adequate amount of tyrosine, the thyroid fails to properly absorb iodine.

    Selenium

    • Selenium aids in the body's overall hormone-conversion process, and it is part of the enzyme in your body that metabolizes the two thyroid hormones. If you have a selenium deficiency, your thyroid activity can decrease.

    Zinc

    • Zinc is essential for human growth and development, and the body needs this mineral so that it can manufacture hormones.

    Vitamin B Complex

    • Although not an herb, vitamin B complex is an excellent natural thyroid treatment, since the B vitamins help support the healthy functioning of the nervous system. A deficiency of B vitamins can cause you to suffer from a host of health problems, and many people find that a B complex supplement helps boost energy, mood and healing.
