Alternative Medications for Toenail Fungus

Oral prescription medications to treat toenail fungus have potentially harmful side effects, so many people are interested in using alternative medications and treatments. When treating toenail fungus, consistent treatment is important. It can take weeks to see improvement, and months for complete resolution of symptoms. While most alternative treatments for fungus are safe, if you are under a doctor's care, talk with your doctor about alternative and complementary medicine.
  1. Vicks Vaporub

    • Many people have reported that they have successfully treated toenail fungus using Vicks VapoRub, a medicated topical ointment usually applied to the chest to relieve coughs and congestion. Recommendations vary: Some suggest applying the ointment only to the affected nail, while others recommend using the ointment on all nails and between the toes. Application recommendations vary from once daily to twice daily. Generic versions of the product are available, and some people have reported success using those versions.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is reported to have antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Try applying a few drops of tea tree oil directly to the affected toenail two to three times daily using a cotton swab. Be sure to apply oil underneath the nail as well as on top. Discontinue if irritation develops.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Soaking the feet in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water two to three times each day is said to help cure toenail fungus. Be sure to remove any nail polish before soaking so that the vinegar can penetrate into the nails. Several people reported that they achieved results more quickly by placing cotton balls soaked in apple cider vinegar onto the affect nails and covering them with adhesive bandages.

    Additional Steps

    • When treating toenail fungus, be sure to wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day. Avoid nail polish. Keep your feet as dry as possible. Wear clean socks every day; if possible, wash your socks with bleach to kill any fungus in your socks. If you can, discard any shoes that may harbor fungus as well.
