Natural Herbs for Neck & Back Pain

Neck and back pain are very common complaints and the search for alternative treatments has increased as we learn about the unwelcome effects of commercial medications, including acetaminophen. Natural herbs are one route you can take to help counter and ease neck and back pain.
  1. Considerations

    • According to the National Pain Foundation, some neck and back pain can be caused by internal organs that are not even close to the spine or back. If you experience persistent or chronic pain, consult your physician or a neurologist to help pinpoint the cause of the problem. And though many natural herbs are thought to be safe, some may have side effects of their own. When considering taking natural herbs for neck and back pain, research the National Institutes of Health website (nlm.nih.gov) to check for possible drug interactions and precautions.

    Willow Bark

    • White willow bark contains salicin, which acts as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory much like aspirin. In fact, the known beneficial effects of salicin led to the development of aspirin in the 1800s. Willow bark can be ingested as a tea or tincture or in capsules and powders. The tea can be made with 2 tsp. of dried bark mixed in 8 oz. of water. Boil the water and bark, then simmer on low heat for 10 minutes; let it steep for an additional 30 minutes and drink two to three times daily.

Willow bark should not be used by people who are sensitive to aspirin, pregnant or breast-feeding. It should not be administered to children and adolescents under 16 years of age.

    Capsicum

    • Capsicum is the chemical that gives chilies and certain peppers their fieriness. When used topically, it's an effective natural herb for soothing neck and back pain. There are many ointments sold that contain capsaicin, but you can also make your own cream at home. Use any white cold cream or skin cream and add a small amount of red pepper until the mixture turns pink. Never apply to sensitive or broken skin.

    Devil's Claw

    • Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant native to southern Africa. It is widely used for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory with good scientific evidence to support these claims, according to the National Institutes of Health. It is especially useful for lower back pain but is used for neck pain as well. You can purchase teas, ointments, tinctures and capsules that contain devil's claw.

Caution should be used in reference to the dose, and many people rely on commercially sold capsules to get the correct dosage. If you suffer from stomach problems or heart problems, consult your physician before taking devil's claw. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use this herb in any form.

    Helpful Teas

    • Other natural herbs for neck and back pain include teas made from chamomile, rosemary, valerian and St. John's wort. The first three are thought to soothe muscle spasms and inflamed muscles. St. John's wort is used for nerve pain but can have some adverse effects if taken with certain medications; always do research to learn about the precautions and side effects associated with natural herbal remedies.
