Ashwagandha Uses

The use of aswagandha , a principal herb in the Indian system of Ayurvedic medicine, goes back more than 2,500 years. This herb is classified as an adaptogen, a substance that provides energy, helps the body handle stress and relieves fatigue. Its most common applications are based on its long history of use in Indian medicine.
  1. General Information

    • An article published in the August 2000 issue of The Alternative Medicine Review detailed the findings of a comprehensive computer search of medical databases to find information related to this herb. Upon review, the authors found that it possesses various benefits. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-stress, antioxidant, immune-strengthening and rejuvenating properties. Based on toxicity studies, it appears to be a safe herbal treatment. It is also known as Indian ginseng and is an excellent supplement for stamina and endurance.

    Brain Health

    • Indian doctors use ashwagandha to treat age-related mental decline in geriatric patients. Natural health expert Ray Sahelian reviewed a number of studies using aswagandha for this purpose and found that it contains many compounds that improve mental functioning, including memory. It primarily influences how the brain uses acetylcholine, a chemical responsible for transmitting information between nerve cells.

    Sexual Problems

    • Ashwagandha is a main herbal treatment for low sex drive. It has a long history of use to increase sexual stamina and lessen the frequency of premature ejaculation. Its most active compounds, alkaloids and withanoloids enhance longevity and possess sexually stimulating properties. Taking ashwaganda is not appropriate for acute sexual issues, it must be taken at least a week to effect any change. The Kama Sutra mentions suggested using this herb to enhance sexual experience.

    Stress and Insomnia

    • Aswagandha has mild sedative properties and has been used for centuries to treat stress and relieve anxiety and insomnia. Do not use this herb if you are already taking any prescription medications for these conditions.

    Inflammatory Conditions

    • It is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Ashwagandha contains natural steroid-like compounds that act in a similar fashion as synthetic ones. In addition to reducing inflammation, it can also reduce the pain that often accompanies these conditions.

    Considerations

    • Take ashwagandha in capsule form as directed on the label. Do not use ashwagandha oil, which is mixed with almond oil and rose water; this is intended for the face. Do not eat the berries as they can cause serious stomach upset. Since it has mild sedative properties, do not use if you are taking other sedatives like tranquilizers.
