Tea Remedies for Kidney Stones
Over half a million people arrive in the emergency room each year with kidney stone-related complaints. Most kidney stones pass out of the body naturally, but for those that cause complications, surgery is often recommended. A number of herbal remedies on the market have properties that are purported to help break down kidney stones naturally. Before opting for an expensive surgical procedure, you may want to try one of these herbal tea recipes.-
Stonebreaker Tea
-
Stonebreaker Tea, or chanca piedra, is derived from a small herb that grows primarily in the rain forest. It is known for its natural ability to break up kidney stones and gallstones. Chanca piedra may also be used as a diuretic, and gained global attention for its effective antiviral properties known to combat hepatitis B.
To prepare, place one tablespoon in one gallon of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain through cheesecloth and drink three cups daily for two or three days. The tea may be chilled if preferred. The tea can be expected to break up the stones in a short amount of time and allow them to pass through the urinary tract unimpeded.
Kidney Stone Tea
-
Although a bit more complicated to prepare, this herbal combination helps to combat uric acid and lessens bleeding, helping to ease the passing of kidney stones naturally. To prepare, add two teaspoons of hydrangea root, one teaspoon of wild yam root and one teaspoon of cramp bark to one and a half quarts of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. After removing the solution from the heat, add one teaspoon of joe-pye weed and half a teaspoon each of corn silk, plantain leaf and yarrow leaf. Strain mixture and refrigerate. Drink four cups daily. Thirty drops of shepherd's purse tincture may be added to each cup if bleeding occurs.
Celery Tea
-
Celery seeds are purported to be a potent aid in combating kidney stones and chronic kidney disease; they also help to increase water elimination and speed the clearance of toxins in the body. The tea is simple to make and should be consumed once daily for three days out of the week. Boil a pint of water and pour over a tablespoon of freshly ground or chopped celery seeds. Allow the tea to cool, then strain and drink. Tea should be made freshly for each dose, if possible. Pregnant women should avoid drinking celery tea because it is a uterine stimulant.
