An unhealthy diet, such as over-consumption of fat and greasy foods coupled with under-consumption of fiber, fruits and vegetables, is one of the main causes of hemorrhoids. Digestion issues related to diet can cause strain during bowel movements, constipation and diarrhea. Drink more water each day to help soften bowel movements and prevent strain. For regularity, eat more fiber and stay away from heavy foods, such as greasy hamburgers.

Treatments, such as baths, sitting techniques and oil applications, are effective ways to treat hemorrhoids. If you experience pain while sitting, try a sitz bath. Run a small amount of warm water into a bathtub or large container that you can sit in. Make sure there is just enough water to cover your hips in a seated position. Too much or not enough water can alter the potency of the sitz bath. While the water is running, add salt, baking soda or essential oils, such as lavender. Once the water has reached the necessary level, sit down and relax. The bath soothes the irritated hemorrhoids and cleans the surrounding area. Soak in the tub for about 20 minutes each day.
Donut seats are also helpful for protruding hemorrhoids. Donut seats provide a cushion for the buttocks and anus, and prevent re-irritating the hemorrhoids by raising the buttocks off of hard surfaces, such as benches and chairs. A downside to donut seats is that you have to carry them with you to different locations. However, they can help painful, protruding hemorrhoids heal faster by reducing the pressure and irritation put on them while you're sitting.
Witch hazel is an astringent that is commonly used to help shrink the blood vessels in hemorrhoids. Apply witch hazel by dabbing a small amount onto a cotton ball and gently pressing it directly against the hemorrhoid. You can purchase witch hazel at your local drug store or pharmacy, such as Walgreens.
