Antibacterial Herbs for Clearing Sinus Infections

Each time you inhale, irritants are brought in that can cause the sinuses to clog, interfering with the drainage of mucus. Pressure from the fluid buildup can cause pain, stuffy nose, bad breath and infection. Although antibacterial herbs can help to clear sinus infections, see a doctor if sinus pain is accompanied by fever, cough or a headache that lasts more than a day, or if swollen eyelids or swelling along the nose occurs. Blurred or double vision or yellow or greenish discharges are also symptoms that should be brought to the attention of the medical care provider.
  1. Echinacea

    • Echinacea helps the body fight bacterial and viral infections by boosting the immune system. Antiviral, antifungal, antiallergenic and antibacterial properties of Echinacea root in an herbal tea can help clear a sinus infection. As an herbal remedy and a soother, Echinacea works well as overdosing and allergic reactions are practically unknown. Echinacea root is readily available in teas and capsules that can be found in health food stores.

    Goldenseal

    • Hydrastis canadensis, or goldenseal, was used by Native American tribes to fight infections and heal inflammations. The antibacterial and astringent properties of the root make goldenseal tea a perfect soother for sinus infections. The steam from the brewing cup, when inhaled, will also ease the sinus passages. Do not use goldenseal in excess as the properties can accumulate in the body. People with high blood pressure should not take goldenseal internally. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid the herb.

    Eucalyptus

    • Brew a tea of fresh eucalyptus leaves to help fight a sinus infection. The leaves contain antibacterial, expectorant and antiseptic properties that also help cleanse the mouth when used as a rinse. Eucalyptus, although safe for adults, is not recommended for ingestion by children.

    Lemon Balm

    • The leaves of lemon balm, or Melissa officinalis, help relieve congestion of sinus infection and fight off bacteria and viruses.

    Garlic

    • Garlic, Allium sativum, eaten raw or used as an infusion or tincture has antibacterial and antiviral properties that can aid in the relief of sinus infections. In 17th century Italy, it was suggested to insert a large garlic clove in the nostril on day one and in the other nostril on day two. A fresh clove was to be used on days three and four.

    About Herbal Remedies

    • Although many people believe herbal remedies for sinus are better alternatives to synthetic drug medication, it is important to remember that some infections respond only to strong doses of antibiotic that can only be prescribed. Some herbs can interact with prescription or over-the-counter medications. It's important to let your doctor know if you plan to treat yourself with herbs.
